What is Fastag and why you should have it

What is Fastag?

Fastag is a high-tech toll collection system that started its services in India in 2017. It was started and operated by NHAI (National Highway Authority of India). It has made toll collection easier, convenient, and comfortable. It also reduced the leakage of money that used to happen in India through the old toll plaza system.

How does it work?

It is completely based on RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology. Each car has a sticker that has an RFID tag, and the toll plazas have RFID scanners. Whenever a car comes to a toll plaza these scanners scan these tags and the money automatically gets deducted from the Fastag account.

How to apply for Fastag?

You can apply for FASTag through any bank in India. If you apply offline you may get the Fastag immediately but if you apply online, they will deliver it to you after some days.

Can you install it by yourself?

Yes, the is installation is quite easy as anyone can install it by themselves.

Is it mandatory to have a Fastag?

Yes. Since 16 February 2021, the Government of India has made it mandatory for users to have FASTag installed on their four-wheeler vehicles.

First of all, as mentioned above in this article Fastag is mandatory now, so everyone should have it.

The other important thing to note is that if you don’t have a Fastag you will have to pay double the toll amount. This is the strongest reason to have a toll tag as soon as possible.
