Use cases of a VPN are very obvious as we can see. But how does it work? What are the less known benefits of the VPN? If you are also curious about questions like this read till the end.

How does VPN work?

Whenever you connect to the internet, you go directly to one website or another. When you enter into any website without a VPN, that makes it easy for them to steal your data.

However, with VPN, they cannot steal your data. With VPN, you don’t directly get to the site where to want to go, instead, the VPN changes the path of the network and the server that you connect with at the end gets no idea where you are connecting from.

Also, the connection between you and the internet is completely encrypted so your ISP (Internet Service Provider) can not have the slightest idea about where are you connecting to on the internet.

For example:- You may be sitting in New Delhi and when you turn on a VPN and select a server in the US, the websites you will visit will behave as if you are located in the US. They would not be able to understand your true location. Also, the ISP won’t be able to detect which site you are connecting to.

Benefits of VPN

  • Encryption – VPNs use various different ways to encrypt your data so you don’t need to worry about your data getting stolen from the network.
  • Disguising your location – As mentioned above the website you connect to won’t have the slightest idea where you are located. You can be sitting anywhere around the world and pretend to be somewhere else.
  • Access to restricted content – You can watch shows and movies which are restricted in your region. For example – Netflix doesn’t let you watch some regional content of an area, then you can switch to VPN pretending to be in that area and you will be able to access that content.

Downsides of using a VPN

It’s almost every time beneficial to use VPN, however, this also has some downsides to it.

  • Slow Internet – This is inevitable as your VPN takes you through various different servers before connecting you to the website you want to browse.
  • VPNs aren’t cheap – Good VPNs aren’t free at all. You always have to pay for good VPNs. Also, free VPNs are more dangerous as they steal your information instead of protecting you.
