Difference between HD, Full HD, Ultra HD, 2K, 4K, and 8K explained

You may have read about these terms when buying anything that has displays in it. Monitors, TVs, and Smartphones all have displays, that’s why they are advertised with these terms.

Display Technologies

We all know that more Ks in the name means higher quality. Ultra HD is better than Full HD and Full HD is better than HD. But why is it so? This is the question that remains unanswered.

In this article, you will understand what do these things really mean and what quality do they offer?

Two important factors in Displays

Size: There are smartphones, monitors, TVs, etc. All these things have different sizes which are generally measured diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. These are generally measured in inches. For example, a smartphone generally has a 5-inch display.

Resolution: Resolution helps us understand how many pixels are there on the screen. Each pixel has its own independent light (Red, Green, or Blue). When all the pixels emit different lights, it creates an image as a whole. So, saying that a screen has a resolution of 1280 x 720 means that it displays 1280 pixels per line and 720 per column. More pixels mean there will be better quality of an image on the display. Because more pixels on the same size of the screen will always create a sharper, clearer, more detailed image.

These terms 2K, 4K, and 8K are nothing but resolutions.

All resolutions explained

HD – HD stands for High Definition. This resolution has 1280 x 720 pixels. It means that there are more than 1 million individual pixels on an HD screen. These are used in low-end TVs and some smartphones.

Full HD – These have a much better image quality than HD, 1920 x 1080 pixels, which is equivalent to more than 2 million pixels. It can be called the most popular resolution right now.

2K – This resolution is a quality between Full HD and Ultra HD. There are 2048 x 1080 pixels in this resolution.

4K or Ultra HD – These come in three resolutions and all are called either 4K or Ultra HD interchangeably. Number of pixels are 3840 x 2160, 4096 x 2160, or 5120 x 2160 pixels. All high-quality displays are 4K.

8K – These screens have a resolution of 7680 x 4320 pixels. They have 4 times more pixels than 4K displays.

Relation between Screen Size and Resolution

There is a very important relationship between both of them. When screen size is very large, you need to have more pixels which means more resolution, the reason behind this is that when the same number of pixels are used on small screens and big screens, the big screen looks poor in quality.

This is because of the low density of pixels. 1 million pixels in a 5-inch display looks good but on a big tv, they will look very poor.
